POLICE yesterday revealed they had seized more than 3000 cannabis plants with an estimated street value of $3.3 million in raids in northern NSW.

Three people were arrested after police made extensive searches around Sleepy Hollow, Crabbes Creek, Burringbar, Mullumbimby, Huonbrook, Possum Creek and Broken Head in recent weeks.

Despite the popularity of growing cannabis indoors in the region, all plants seized were growing outdoors.

The annual Cannabis Eradication Program operated under the banner of Strike Force Aster.

It involved officers from the NSW Crime Command Drug Squad, Tweed Byron Local Area Command and other specialist units.

A 58-year-old woman and two men, aged 39 and 63, will face court next month on charges of cultivating a prohibited drug.

Inspector Greg Carey, of Tweed Byron Local Area Command, said he was pleased with the results of the five-day operation.

"The Tweed Byron LAC supports and greatly appreciates the assistance it gets on the annual Cannabis Eradication Program through the State Crime Command Unit," he said.

"The command continues to tackle drug-related crime.

"We have a strong focus as a command to tackle drug manufacturing and supply.

"We will continue to do so, vigorously targeting not only significant issues such as the cultivation of cannabis in this area, but all types of manufactured drugs of other known prohibited means."

Insp Carey said the 3000 plants seized were all cultivated outdoors.

"It's well known to police that there would be as many grown (plants) hydroponically, out of the view of police eyes," he said.

"The police heavily rely on the community to supply them with information, not only on existing grown cannabis but all drug-related activity.

"No matter how ... insignificant it seems, it may well piece the puzzle together for us."

He said Tweed Byron police would continue to work with Queensland and federal officers on drug crime.

Hehe, I was reading this and wondering if they were gonna say they found tortilla presses and make-shift huts.:hubba: Guess that's just our problem. Funny, too, how they never mention the blatant destruction of their outback caused from pesticides, ferts, yada yada etc. but here it's all about that.... Hmm.
