RCMP busted a "large, sophisticated" marijuana grow-op on a rural property near Rimbey this week, seizing thousands of plants and thousands of dollars in drugs and equipment.

Cops searched a rural farm property about 120 km southwest of Edmonton on Monday in relation to an electrical power theft investigation.

There they discovered 2,325 cannabis marijuana plants in various stages of growth as well as $30,000 worth of production equipment in a large pig barn.

Police said the plants seized represented one half of the operation with the other half likely already harvested.

Officers searched two Red Deer residences the following day and have identified a suspect.

They are now looking for a 28-year-old Red Deer man for offences related to alleged theft of electrical power, production of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

One fully mature marijuana plant can produce up to 500 joints on average, said RCMP spokesman Cpl. Wayne Oakes in a news release. This operation could have yielded up to 1,162,500 joints.

"Illegal drugs impact Alberta communities at various levels," Oakes said.

"Drug activities produce negative consequences for the families and friends of users, family violence, crimes against other persons, loss of productivity for employers, and various criminal activities such a robberies, break and enters, thefts, property crimes, along with all aspects of organized crime."
