    Deer

Once young plants are established, our next hurdle are the deer. Although they won’t touch flowering plants, deer love plants in veg stage. I once lost an entire years crop to the herbivores. In Vermont we call them hooved rats. A simple solution is an effective deterrent. We use Bobbex, a...

    Best Yield

Thanks Chad/Westport for that link to Mendo Dope. Impressive plants! Looks like their drip irrigation boosts growth for those stratospheric yields. My natural intermittent Vermont rains are sufficient for good enough growth for me. Kudos to you West Coast growers with your long season!

    Best Yield

Just wondering what the upper limits of plant yield is for large outdoor plants. My largest plant yield was 2.5 lbs. I was told by a California outdoor grower that yields can be above 5 lbs. I’d like to hear if anyone has witnessed any mega crops.

    Organic starter mix.

I prepare this mix early each spring to start my seeds in: 1/3 dry sand. I retrieve a full Sheetrock bucket of sand from a beach in the fall. This sand is carefully flushed with a hose to leach out any salt from the ocean. The sand is then dried for easy mixing. 1/3 finely screen peat moss...

    Outdoor recomend

Mold is always a problem late in the season here in Vermont. My all time favorite landrace seed was a Hindu-Kush strain of Indica. Unfortunately it is highly prone to bud rot and I no longer grow it. As an outdoor grower, I’ve tried many strains and was surprised not to see my favorite mold...

    LONG term storage

Been outdoor growing for decades, I’ve found that dried buds stored in sealed jars stored in a cool dark place degrade after about 12-18 months. Weed becomes darker, flavor fades, and worst of all, buds becomes harsh and unpleasant to smoke. Perhaps suitable for tinctures or other meds but NOT...

Old guy with 50 years experience

My friend next to plant is 6 feet tall. This plant was started under T5’s, transplanted at 6 weeks after last frost May 25. Never watered or fertilized or pruned. I did pick off occasional buds showing mold. Harvested ( used a small chainsaw ) October 6. Yield : 41 ounces dried bud

    Vermont legal grow limits

Mature is considered in flowering stage. I think the cops actually only consider mature to be close to harvest. I was told a grower had 8 huge plants close to harvest last summer. . A neighbor spotted them and called the police. Police showed up and confronted grower about his large plant...

I only grew shorter plants in the old days. One of the great pleasures in legalized growing is sitting on your porch watching the girls grow tall and bushy. I don’t miss the old paranoia days when the sounds of a helicopter sent chills down my spine.

Old guy with 50 years experience

I’ve been growing in the same place for decades. For over 20 years I grew only one variety, a landrace strain from the Hindu Kush Mountains. Unfortunately, due to inexperience and crop failures, I lost this strain. In the last 20 years I’ve gone over to the wonderful new hybrids the breeders...

Old guy with 50 years experience

As an organic grower, I only grow varieties that are mold resistant, and practice careful removal of infected buds as soon as problems appear. My plants are in an area with optimum air circulation and get full sun from sunup to sunset. Some years are a struggle, other years I’ll have almost...

    Vermont legal grow limits

Vermont legalized pot 2 years ago. Growers are allowed 6 plants, only 2 of which can be mature. Growers can possess any amount harvested from those 2 plants. (My average legal yield is about 2 pounds per plant ). This pot cannot be sold or bartered. It can only be gifted in 2 ounce increments (...
