YOKOHAMA -- Two university rugby players have been arrested for growing marijuana plants at the club's dormitory here, police said.
Taiki Nakamura, 21, and Keiji Umeno, 20, members of Kanto Gakuin University's rugby club, stand accused of violating the Cannabis Control Law. The two, who are roommates at the dormitory, admitted to the allegations during questioning.
"We grew marijuana plants for ourselves," one of them was quoted as telling investigators.
Nakamura and Umeno grew 16 marijuana plants in their room at the dormitory in Kanazawa-ku, Yokohama, according to Kanagawa Prefectural Police.
A student who visited their room noticed the plants and consulted a university employee, who in turn alerted police. Officers confirmed that the plants were marijuana and arrested Nakamura and Umeno.
Kanto Gakuin won its 11th title in the Kanto university rugby league last Sunday. Umeno played in one game.
