Ottawa takes small knife to bloated spending
Wednesday, September 27, 2006, Page A16
With one dramatic swoop, the Conservative government has chopped funding from dozens of federal programs, eliminating everything from medical marijuana research to the court challenges program. The list of 66 specific cuts, totalling $1-billion, may not seem like much from annual program-spending of almost $189-billion. But, with these targeted moves, the Tories have kept their promise to find savings and clearly shifted the focus from the former Liberal government's priorities to their own. As Finance Minister James Flaherty told a news conference, "We are trimming the fat and refocusing spending on the priorities of Canadians."
