Hawaii will allow visitors to access medical marijuana

Medical cannabis patients can soon travel to Hawaii without having to worry about receiving medicine.

The state Department of Health announced Tuesday that the state will begin allowing out-of-state visitors to register for medical cannabis, the Associated Press reports.

According to the state’s Health Department, visitors who qualify as medical marijuana patients from other U.S. states will now be able to register online for a temporary card that allows them to purchase medical cannabis products during their visit. Out-of-state patients can register before arriving in Hawaii, so they can purchase from certified dispensaries as soon as they enter the state.

“The introduction of Hawaii’s electronic medical cannabis card is a major step in improving access to medical cannabis for qualified patients in Hawaii and out-of-state patients in the 37 other jurisdictions where medical cannabis is allowed,” Bruce Anderson, director of the state Department of Health, said to the AP.

Applicants are asked to pay a $49.50 application fee, and are allowed to register up to 60 days before visiting. Visitors cards would remain valid for 60 days, and patients can apply twice in a calendar year. Visiting patients are allowed to purchase up to four ounces of marijuana throughout a 15-day period.

These recent developments seek to help patients, as well as Hawaiian dispensaries that were previously not allowed to serve those in need of treatment.

“We’ve had people from out of state come and try to buy from us and we’ve had to tell them that there’s nothing we can do,” said Dylan Shropshire, chief executive officer of Big Island dispensary Big Island Grown, in an interview with the Hawaii Tribune-Herald. “We can’t even let them into the dispensary if they’re not registered.”
