TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Toms River man who claims New Jersey State Police went too far, searching his anus and genitals while looking for marijuana during a 2017 traffic stop, has filed a lawsuit seeking $900,000 in damages over what he says was a sexual assault.
Jack Levine of Toms River filed a civil rights lawsuit Thursday in New Jersey Superiour Court over the actions of New Jersey State troopers during the stop that happened in Southampton Township, according to a report by the Asbury Park Press. Levine says the search, in public on the side of the road, was humiliating.
Levine eventually was let go with only a traffic ticket after no marijuana was found, and the ticket later was dismissed, the report said.
The incident came to light after Levine filed a tort claim in April. Video of the incident was obtained by John Paff, an advocate for open government, who then published the video on his website.
In the video, a trooper wearing latex gloves can be seen sticking his hand down Levine's pants. Levine can be heard screaming for help and yelling that he is being raped as the trooper searches both the front of his pants and the back.
