An Ohio man was arrested on I-17 north of the Valley Wednesday when sheriff's deputies found over 100 pounds of marijuana in his car.
Newton Henry, 66, of Columbus, Ohio has been charged with Possession and Transportation of Marijuana for Sale, according to a report released Thursday.
According to the report, at about 5:45 p.m., a Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputy noticed a Volvo sedan with Ohio plates following a vehicle too closely. When the deputy caught up to the car, the driver nearly struck the police vehicle while changing lanes.
The deputy activated his overhead emergency lights, but the driver refused to pull over. About a half-mile later, the deputy was able to pull the vehicle over with the aid of a siren, according to a report released Thursday.
Henry reportedly told the deputy he was in town to see the NBA All-Star game in Phoenix and had stayed at a hotel in Tucson.
While the officer was talking to him, Henry seemed very nervous and when asked about illicit drugs in the vehicle, he refused a consent search. As a result, the officer deployed a narcotics K9 for an exterior sniff search of the vehicle.
The K9 pulled the deputy towards the trunk of the car, and when the deputy opened it, he discovered five bales of compressed marijuana. The pot was wrapped in trash compactor bags and then layered with plastic wrap and paper towels soaked in a fragrant cleaning agent. The outside layer consisted of contact paper with a wood grain appearance. The bales varied in size and weighed a total of 102 pounds.
Henry reportedly denied any knowledge of the pot in his trunk, along with two cell phones and $700 in cash also found in the vehicle. Henry was arrested and booked at the Camp Verde detention center, and remains in custody on a $25,000 bond.
The vehicle and cash were impounded.
