RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson says marijuana should be legalized and treated like alcohol because the government's war on drugs has failed.
The outspoken evangelical Christian and host of "The 700 Club" on the Virginia Beach-based Christian Broadcasting Network he founded said the war on drugs is costing taxpayers billions of dollars. He said people should not be sent to prison for marijuana possession.
The 81-year-old first became a self-proclaimed "hero of the hippie culture" in 2010 when he called for ending mandatory prison sentences for marijuana possession convictions.
"I just think it's shocking how many of these young people wind up in prison and they get turned into hardcore criminals because they had a possession of a very small amount of a controlled substance," Robertson said on his show March 1. "The whole thing is crazy. We've said, `Well, we're conservatives, we're tough on crime.' That's baloney."
Robertson's support for legalizing pot appeared in a New York Times story published Thursday. His spokesman confirmed to The Associated Press that Robertson supports legalization with regulation. Robertson was not made available for an interview.
"I really believe we should treat marijuana the way we treat beverage alcohol," Robertson was quoted by the newspaper as saying. "If people can go into a liquor store and buy a bottle of alcohol and drink it at home legally, then why do we say that the use of this other substance is somehow criminal?"
Robertson said he "absolutely" supports ballot measures in Colorado and Washington state that would allow people older than 21 to possess a small amount of marijuana and allow for commercial pot sales. Both measures, if passed by voters, would place the states at odds with federal law, which bans marijuana use of all kinds.
While he supports the measures, Robertson said he would not campaign for them and was "not encouraging people to use narcotics in any way, shape or form."
"I'm not a crusader," he said. "I've never used marijuana and I don't intend to, but it's just one of those things that I think: this war on drugs just hasn't succeeded."
In a statement Thursday, Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, said Robertson's "clearly stated and well-reasoned comments throw a curve ball into the growing debate over legalizing marijuana."
"Defenders of marijuana prohibition ... must be wondering if it's only a matter of time before theirs proves to be a lost cause," he said.
Christian advocacy group Focus on the Family opposes legalization for medical or recreational use, Carrie Gordon Earll, the organization's senior director of government and public policy, said in a statement. The group would not comment specifically on Robertson's statements.
Sixteen states and the District of Columbia have legalized the medical use of marijuana. Fourteen states also have some kind of marijuana decriminalization law, which removes or lowers penalties for possession. Legalization, however, would eliminate penalties and pave the way for regulated sales similar to alcohol.
Robertson's comments will likely help drive cultural conversations on the issue, said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.
"Whenever somebody of substance and notoriety in this country ... comes out in favor of changing the status quo regarding marijuana, for us and for the reform community, as the kids say, `It is all good," St. Pierre said.

Somebody tell Pat we don't need his "help".

The guy is a total Jackasss.

I agree. He is whacked. Think someone in his family has benefited by pot?

Yea he's a nut job, he's whack, but he also has a TV show, A few hundred thousand followers. Followers that I would guess 75% or more equate pot with heroin. If he can change some of thier minds about pot, good for him, good for us too. His audience is a bunch a middle aged to elderly people that VOTE. If he can convince some of them that pot isn't the end a da world then I say let him have at it. I don't havta like the guy or cheer him on to appreciate that he might change a few minds.

Good point Markers. It is scary that he has that much power.

but what about the millions of people that think he is a whack job, they will see this as another crackpot going off on something about MMJ, Pats a turd, go to youtube and type "Pat roberson quotes" its unreal, he lives in the 17th century.

Most of them people already know the truth about pot lol. He's in a position to change minds that are hard to change.

I dont know, thats a big assumption to me. If you are right, all the
better :cool2:

I don't know man, I been seein him in and out a the spot light since the 70's. I don't hold much stock in organized religion, especially TV Evangelism. But when I see a guy like him change his mind about the evils of pot it gives me hope for for others of his ilk including right wing politicians that vote on laws.

See now I figure either him or someone close to him is about to get in trouble for it and he is just trying to do some damage control. I also am not a fan, to put it mildly, of organized religion. All that aside I still can't stand this dangerous idiot and wish he wld not attach his name to our movement.

Everyone is so worried about the terrorists attacking this country and in reality they hve been here all along trying to make it mandatory that their beliefs are America's beliefs. The Religious Right scares me more then Al Qaeda.

Wonder how many heart attacks he caused when he came out for mj?

I understand your point but on the other hand dangreous idiots like him might be a part of what the movement needs to move forward.

I agree-I think it can't hurt at all and might help slightly. I think anyone with a platform coming out in favor of decriminalization is a good thing.

Those that think him a crackpot will ignore him as usual!

hmmm on one hand you have a bunch a folks that wish things would stay as they were in 1956. On the other you have you have a bunch a folks that are convinced that me and and all people like me are the devil and won't stop until we are all dead. Personally I'd rather not end up beheaded hanging from a bridge.

Those "folks" that think we are the devil are religious extriemists kinda like our own Religious right. They are just upfront about it and take an extreme view on "their" religion. Thing is nobody in their right mind wld vote a terrorist into the White House...but plenty of misguided and in my opinion brain washed folks are pulling the lever for Rick Santorum. Bottom line and my ultimate point is if religion was kept out of politics both here and abroad the World wld be a better and safer place. Jmo

Hell it'd be just fine with me if we could do away with all organised religion and politics. Both basically want the same thing--control and power.
