TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A bill that would allow patients to smoke medical marijuana was approved by Governor Ron DeSantis on Monday. It goes into effect immediately.

The bill passed through Florida's House and was presented to the governor on Wednesday.

DeSantis had asked for legislators to present him with a bill that would regulate the smoking of the drug by a deadline of Friday. If lawmakers didn't hit his deadline, he vowed to pull the state out of a lawsuit that would lift the smoking ban. Medical marijuana was approved in Florida more than two years ago, but smoking it was still illegal.

This smokable medical marijuana bill was filed in the Senate on Jan. 28. It stipulated that card-carrying patients could receive 2.5 ounces of marijuana every 35 days. Meanwhile, patients under 18 would not be able to receive the treatment, except with a terminal condition and recommendations from two doctors.

he bill passed through the Florida Senate by a 34-4 vote on March 7, and by a vote of 101-11 in the House on March 13, two days before DeSantis' deadline.
