EMMETT TWP. (Newschannel 3) - Police in Emmett Township have arrested a man from New Mexico for transporting nearly 900 pounds of marijuana.

It happened on Thanksgiving morning on I-94 near the 104 mile marker.

The discovery was made by an Emmett Twp. Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier officer, conducting a routine traffic stop.

After pulling over a commercial flatbed truck for speeding, the officer became concerned that the information the 50-year-old driver was giving him wasn't correct.

Once establishing that the driver had a number of warrants out for his arrest, the officer contacted officers from the narcotics unit to help him search the truck.

Inside a concealed compartment in the truck that was made to look like a stack of plywood, the officers found nearly 900 pounds of marijuana, a street value of more than $1 million.

The driver, whose name is not being released at this time, is currently lodged in the Calhoun Co. Jail on drug charges, in addition to a number of other charges.

The case has been turned over to the DEA for additional investigation.
