problems when replacing nutrient solution

The symptoms of my plants are wilting and overall non-vigor the whole plant is being affected. I have a couple ideas on what this could be from and was hoping someone would be able to confirm my mistakes. I think the root of the problem is that I allow the roots to stay dry for to long while changing the solution. Ff this is the problem please advise me of what is the best solution i was thinking of misting the roots with a spray bottle but wanted to get some advice because this happened before. Before i thought it was the way i used the flora shield product on the nutrient solution and was hoping that i could rule this out as one of the factors. Could someone who is experienced and wise please bestow knowledge on this thought. much appreciation in advance ......BUDDS

how long does it take to change the solution, it should not matter for any normal amount of time.
