Water Retention/uptake difficulties..

Well my FFOF soil isnt really letting the water sink in to it. I finally got it soaked i think but hopefully I dont have the same problem.
It worries me a little because it would seem that there would be spots in the soil that didnt get water? IDK maybe i'm worrying to much but any advice would help maybe ease the mind.

If the top is crusted over, break it up.

Use a milk jug with a small hole to water with,instead of just pouring a bunch of water on the top.

Use more perlite in your soil mix next time.

you are letting the soil dry out to much IMO
