The US "justice" system is set up, not to keep the streets safe, but to imprison as many people as possible. The law enforcement and prison industry employs hundreds of thousand and creates vast profits for prison companies. The US imprisons a greater percentage of it's people than any other country on earth and for longer periods of time as well. I know of no other country where you can be sentenced to life without possibility of parole.
The criminalisation of MJ is an important link in this industry and will continue until the taxpayers realize the huge cost of this nonsense. As well harsh punishments and more prisons are an easy way to get the votes of neo-facists, right-wing christians and others of the truly nasty and vicious in society.

Have you seen Food Inc? If cannabis were legal, it would challenge the status quo of corporations. Monsanto would license cannabis seeds and sue everyone who violated their copyright. It all comes down to money and control. We might realize legalization/regulation...but the trillionaires will go after the nascent industry in short order.
