whats the best light for mother plants

when wanting to maintain a good height on the plant what is a good light to use and still be effective enough to grow at a good rate?

...I use/prefer cfl's(compact flourescents), cheap to purchase, operate, and seem to provide adequate PAR for keeping mothers in a rather "suspended" state.
