Police confiscated $1 million worth of high-quality marijuana from a Wisconsin womans van on I-55 during a highway drug detail Monday.
Roberta Albrecht, 54, who police say has a legal permit to carry marijuana in California, was arrested after officers found about 83 pounds of marijuana inside five suitcases, according to South Central Illinois Drug Task Force Sgt. Tod Dowdy.
When state police pulled over Albrechts 2008 Chevrolet Express van, they smelled marijuana in the vehicle, he said. She allegedly admitted to having the drug in a small case.
Albrecht, who had no criminal record before her arrest Monday, was taken to the Montgomery County Jail after police searched her van.
Albrecht, who has homes in California and Wisconsin, has a medical marijuana permit to grow 90 cannabis plants in California, authorities said. However, the permit is no good once she leaves the state.
The amount of plants that shes allowed to grow would mean in one years time she would smoke 125 pounds of cannabis, which is highly unlikely for any one individual to smoke that much, Dowdy said. She was claiming she was transporting this for someone else, but that will be determined through the investigation.
The confiscated marijuana was a particularly potent strain called OG Kush, Dowdy said. Whereas street-level marijuana from Illinois goes for $100 to $130 per ounce, the California-grown OG Kush is a higher-quality plant and about eight times more expensive.
Its that type of hybrid, he said. There are no stems, no seeds, just straight bud. Weve gotten several pounds before, but this quality of marijuana was the unusual part of it.
