How to tell the sex

Hello, I am new to growing and I have about 20 plants about a foot tall. They are a month & 1/2 old. It looks like a few of them have potental buds growing on top. How can I tell if these are females. And also I read that I am supposed to seperate the males and females but again I cant tell who is who. Please help me. Thx
