Feds investigating Utah Democratic governor candidate's wife for marijuana use
By Dennis Romboy, Deseret News
SALT LAKE CITY The U.S. Attorney's Office for Utah confirmed it has an open investigation into Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Weinholtz's wife using marijuana.
U.S. Postal Inspection Service and Homeland Security are involved in the investigation, said Melodie Rydalch, U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman. She wouldn't elaborate.
Weinholtz revealed at the state Democratic Party convention in April that local police were investigating his wife, Donna, for marijuana possession. He said she uses cannabis for chronic pain from arthritis and ongoing nerve problems.
Weinholtz said at the time that Donna Weinholtz hadn't been arrested and is cooperating with police, but if he's elected governor, he would work to legalize medical marijuana.
"As far as we know, the status of the investigation is the same today as it has been for over two months and remains an open investigation. No decision has been made as to whether Donna will, in fact, be prosecuted, or if so, even by whom. When we have more information to share, we will do so at the appropriate time," the Weinholtz campaign said.
