MARION COUNTY, Fla. -- A real estate agent says he noticed something suspicious at a house and called the sheriff's department. Investigators said inside the home they found more than 250 marijuana plants with a value of more than $800,000.

Omar Camejo has been selling real estate for 20 years. But he's never shown a house like the one on Southwest 138th Street Road.

It's the odor that hits you first Camejo said. This home was full of marijuana plants. Much of the pot was apparently grown in the garage and processed in a back bedroom.

"It's pretty clear that's what was going on in here. We found several pairs of scissors and knives and chopped marijuana all over the carpet," Camejo said.

Camejo manages the property for an owner who rents it out. But the real estate agent got suspicious when the particular tenants paid their rent in cash and would not allow him to inspect the place.

"They were always making an excuse not to see the property. And they were threatening. 'If you come I'll leave the property,'" Camejo added of the tenants.

Sheriff's detectives believe the people who grew all this pot are Cuban-Americans from Miami. They never actually lived in this house, but drove up to Marion County once a week to check on the crops and they're likely long gone.

Detectives have names and South Florida addresses, but they're probably phony. Camejo said his client's house is trashed and would easily cost $25,000 to fix.

"And the tenants, being the way the market is right now, they need these tenants paying the rent. But they don't need it this bad," Camejo stated.

Marion County drug agents said they're seeing more Cuban nationals from Miami come up to Marion County to grow marijuana inside homes.
