WATER seeping through a ceiling led cops to a cannabis factory in a town centre flat only a few hundred yards from a police station.

Officers also noticed a strong sweet smell coming from the property which is a telltale sign that illegal drugs were being kept there.

They raided rented accommodation in the usually quiet Ferguson Street, Renfrew, which looks on to Robertson Park and lies across the street from the Inchinnan Road cop shop.

The squad, all wearing stab-proof vests, used a hand-held battering ram to burst through the door of the upper flat.

Once inside officers found a bedroom full of cannabis plants in different stages of growth.

They also began a room-by-room search but, it understood, no more drugs were found.

The exact number of plants is not known but the street value is thought to be a few thousand pounds.

A woman, who lives near the raided flat, said: “Someone complained about water seeping through to a flat in the block.

“At first it was thought to be a burst pipe then someone noticed a strong sweet smell coming from the flat, a smell you associate with cannabis.”

She went on: “That was when the police were brought in. They forced open the door and discovered a room full of cannabis plants.

“There were also heat lamps and ventilation gear, which was confiscated along with the plants.

“I don’t know how many plants there were but the cops were in the flat for a while.

“All the plants were loaded into a van and taken away.”

No-one is believed to have been living in the flat and last night police were trying to trace a man who had rented it. Inquiries are continuing.

Earlier this year police found a cache of guns in a flat at Ferguson Street.

Since the start of the year, £4.2million of pounds worth of lethal drugs and cannabis plants have been seized during a series of police raids.

The largest haul was at a printing business in Paisley’s East End where a batch of cannabis was discovered on a wooden pallet. It was reckoned to weigh 1.3 tonnes.

And police smashed a drugs ring after uncovering more than £100,000 worth of heroin following dawn raids on homes in Paisley, a few months ago.

Three other swoops by cops unearthed cannabis factories – one in the town’s West End and two in neighbouring rented homes in Bishopton.
