just curious, say you bought a 50 day flowering strain

and you start the 12/12 light cycle from seed
when does the countdown begin?
first flower sign or?

i know you must go by trics to harvest, just getting a idea

Not that days mean anything but as far as keeping track of things in my journal I count from the flip to 12/12....

Start the manufacturers flowering time when your plants start flowering. A 50 day plant typically takes some extra time to begin flowering in 12/12.

I was always told by distributers that the count starts from the day you flip, but I have yet to see one end in the time they claimed it would. However, if you start 12/12 from seed it is going to take time to get sexually mature before it starts flowering, so in your case you have no choice but to start from when you saw pistils. But the best way is still checking trichs.

Yes, it can be confusing. Recently, I've been counting from the first pistils I see, but still, the number of days is just an estimate.
