best way to pre-sampling the bud smell

some people rub the stock to figure out what the dry bud will smell like. To me this didnt work, didnt smell anything like my bud, just like a pine(y) stock, like it smelt in veg. The resin smelt exactly the way my bud smells. I would rub some off a leaves tip, rub my fingers together, and smell. My bud came out just like that smell. What do you guys do?
