i'm about to start my first cabinet grow and i am going to purchase an ionizer for the smell. do i still need an exhaust fan? if so wouldn't that leak the smell?

You should always have an exhaust. I would think if your air inside the box was ionated you wouldn't have a problem but i've never used one myself. People usually use a carbon filter connected to the exhaust for this.
 
agreed! no matter what u need an exhaust so your plant can exchange the air. you need this because one of the major points of photosynthesis is Co2, which is in your breath and the air around you so exhaust is crucial. as for the ionizer i think there would be no smell but your never know. i would say instead to use a carbon filter then you have some what of a gurantee. if price isnt an issue you could easily by one to fit ur fan and if it is an issue this link explains how to make a pretty good DIY carbon filter
