Has anyone seen bud growing on the stems of the shade leaves? I don't recall seeing this before. It is only doing it on my strain of blueberry.

Yeah that is pretty wild how that happens. I had a couple leaves that developed nice buds right in the center of the leaf. It was a blueberry strain as well. :)

I have read about this and they think that the flowers will be sterile but they are not sure.

yup i had a BBxNL5 that seemed to do this also in both hydro & soil. had a TGA strain do it also, it was in the honeymoon pack. oh and a c99xAK47, so as you can see its pretty common although crazy to see.
