ive got a few plants on my roof also. i went to home depot and got a 10' x 10' astroturf. dont remember the price, but it was not expensive. big difference than letting your plants sit on that hot surface. i have a couple street lights about 100 to 150 ft away. i have no problems. im also close to the ocean. even with a good breeze the roof can get hot. you can even leave your pots on 4" boards, that will allow airflow

As a tradesman ( hvac) I wouldnt due to the heat as mentioned above. Unless youre R/H is low and adding a mister to help cool things down. IMO i wouldnt waste my time.
Personally i would look at the obvious spots and think how to incorporate them into that surrounding. I lived in a mid level home and my neighbor never looked once at my "hedge" of roses and greeenery.

It's wierd too sometimes the obvious will just bslp you for not thinking about it sooner !
