Polyploidy is the possession of more than two sets of chromosomes... Can and does occur naturally in a lot of plants, usually angiosperms (flowering plants). Can be any where from 3 (triploid) to as many as 12 (dodecaploid)! Some animals possess this quality, but s usually a mutation of some sort... Hope this helps broman!

More often than not polyploidy within human DNA results in miscarriage... Those who make it to term usually die shortly after birth. In some cases survival past birth may occur longer if there is mixoploidy with both a diploid and a triploid cell population present... But this results in numerous genetic defects and mutations; (ie. cleft lip etc.)... Pretty nasty stuff if you ask me!
