SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT. -- Two American teens who allegedly travelled 800 kilometres and crossed a frozen Northern Ontario river to retrieve their stashed pot are facing drug charges after they fell through the ice just metres from shore.
The two youths, who allegedly bought about 700 grams of marijuana in Toronto last month, didn't want to cross the border with the drug, so they stashed it under the dock of a home in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., police said. The teens then returned home to Iowa.
When they saw rivers freezing over in their home communities, they decided to head back to get their drugs on Jan. 20, RCMP Constable Al Montgomery said.
Arriving on the U.S. side of the frozen St. Marys River, they walked about a kilometre across the ice to retrieve the marijuana, he said.
They just about made it, but fell through the ice a mere eight metres from the Canadian shore, he said. "It was very dangerous," Constable Montgomery said of the botched river crossing. "They could have very well drowned."
Neighbouring residents called 911 when they saw the pair slip into the frigid water.
The two teens, who were treated by paramedics, first told firefighters they were visiting relatives. After further investigation, they were arrested and police with a drug-sniffing dog found the pot.
They are each charged with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of marijuana for the purpose of export.
