I had to go find the pot I used last run for a mom.
Here is what they sell at wlmart, is it something like this?
If so, this is totally different, this works by wicking, there is a small compartment underneath the pot where the water stores and is then wicked up by the wick. You could not use soil in my hempy's or your roots would sufficate and die. I am not sure I could even use just coco with no perlite.
These pots work excellently with soil or a soil-less medium because there is a barrier that seperates the water from the soil so it doesn't stay too wet, it just wicks up what it needs.
Are you sure this is not how the other pots are working because they do look very similar to these pots
