Interestingly enough I have managed to have this same problem with some bag seed that probally had bad genes as a result of a unexepected hermi. When my plant started doing the same thing in my first grow I just let it keep on going as it was and the buds came out nice the leaves didnt die off...

You can try to tie it down horizontally like i did recently. Rather than tie a few nodes down i tied the top of the 3ft plant down horizontally i plan to have it grow this way through the life time of the plant. Although the nodes are now closer to 10in now but its better than 3ft for my setup...
