I use Grandma for growing once.
The ashes mixed in quite well and helped with water passage.

I mixed some of my raging anti weed drug warrior moms ashes in with the soil on my last seed run.
Now every plant I grow has some of her in it.

An update: I may have over-CO2-ed. : Just-popped seeds 2 days old, 2-3 inches and extremely spindly. Hope they don't topple. Might be the strain (don't know it pedigree; darn good local seed) that turns into 8 foot Christmas trees. However, others just sprouted seem taller than I would expect.

Add potting soil around the base right up to the bottom leaf from the hull. It will grow additional roots

Spindley usually means too far away from the light. I always keep the light close and keep a small fan blowing on 'em to make the stems tougher.

Having a cup over the seedlings will filter out some light and as hippie said, a fan helps strengthen the stems and the cup also blocks any breeze. I think those factors are why the seedlings are spindly.

Yep. They need light and air movement to get strong.
