You take a clipping of a leaf thats close to the bud and look at it with a magnifying glass.The will only change as they get closer to harvest time.Your trich's will start out clear then turn cloudy.Then when it is getting close to harvest they will change to a amber color.You want about 50/50 cloudy/amber.Keep it GREEN:hubba: heres a good link to help you more http://www.marijuanapassion.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16474
