He played six Bach pieces for about 60 minutes. During that time approximately 2,000 people went through the station, most of them on their way to work. After:

3 minutes

A middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing. He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.
4 minutes
The violinist received his first dollar: a woman threw the money in the till and without stopping, continued to walk.
6 minutes
A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
10 minutes
A three year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly, as the kid stopped to look at the violinist. Finally the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time. This action was repeated by several other children. Every parent, without exception, forced them to move on.
45 minutes
The musician played. Only 6 people stopped and stayed for a while. About 20 gave him money but continued to walk their normal pace. He collected $32.
1 hour:
He finished playing and silence took over. No one noticed. No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

This is a real story. The Washington Post, as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people's priorities, arranged the entire scenario. Playing incognito, no one knew the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the best musicians in the world. He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars. Two days prior to this, Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the tickets averaged $100 per seat.
The questions raised:
In a common place environment at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty; do we stop to appreciate it;
do we recognize talent in such an unexpected context?
One possible conclusion reached from this experiment could be:

If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ....... How many other things are we missing?

While I appreciate "the experiment", and its implications I think it was flawed. Although Joshua Bell is a world famous violinist, few people know who he is. Even fewer know what he looks like. And I seriously doubt that were any luthiers in the crowd that would even have the slightest clue as to him playing a 3.5 million dollar instrument.

Now try Bono playing in Times Square with a million dollar Martin guitar. I bet it might have slightly different outcome...but I get it. Finding the extordinary amoung the every day is what photography is all about.

My family thinks I'm a nut about 3-4 times a week when I rush them outside to see a sunrise/sunset. Great story, Hick. To all those people rushing to work 12 hours a day...noone goes to their grave wishing they could have worked one more day.

wish i was there would of smoked a blunt listened watched then i would of been 1.5 mil. dollars richer:hubba:

Two words: Hyper Vigilance.

..I often asking people "Did you see that?"...

...often I get: "Oh, I wasn't paying attention."
The whole parents attempting to shelter their kids form street performers is...well...expected.

This study makes me sad.

I totally agree with you Stoney, I catch myself wondering all of the time what it would be like to not have the stress of everyday life clouding up brain !

I can tell you now, chris. I'm retired, have no need or desire for a job and an infatuation with hydroponic gardening. I'm building an outside hydro unit right now that will be able to grow 16 full size mixed plants in it, in a 64 sq ft footprint.

Vertical Outdoor Hydroponics.

I won't have it built in time to use this year, but next year, I'll have at least one going in the front yard.

I don't allow stress in my life now. I get up when I want. I go to sleep when I want to and I eat when I feel like it.

I live one mile from the ocean and love to surf fish.

I laugh a lot. Being high helps with that.

think i'll take a walk with my camera, dog, and gf. the sun is going home now.

was going to post about the children. then read stoney's post. ahh, the uncluttered mind has room for expansion. thats peace of mind.

almost there too...
