Trichrome Question.......

My plants have been at flowering for about three weeks now, and I have a quick question. Are the trichromes to change color on the buds themselves (the tiny white hairs), or are they on the leaves and only visable with a magnifying glass. Have read a lot of posts on trichromes, but am still confused as to what EXACTLY I am to be looking for.....
