What happens when a ballast burns up?

Im just curious, sometimes when I go to bed and my lights is on, I wonder what would happen if the ballast went out.
Do they catch on fire? just die?
Anyone ever had this happen? I would like to know what generally happens.

I have replaced hundreds of magnetic ballasts, most of the time they just die. have seen a few smoke but never catch fire.

Same here,
Some times they just smoke'd a lil and others the humming gradualy got louder before everything suddenly just stopped. I know quite alot of growers over and none of them have had a ballast fire either, i think the ballast Has some type safety shutdown to avoid fire risk. I wouldnt worry about it, keep us posted!
