my dog found a gofer turtle on my property ,,nice size one I guess hes pretty old ,,,he has a few crack on his back were his shell has broken in ,,,ants were eating him up pretty bad ,,,so I took a hose and cleaned out the ants from the cracks ,,,were I live you are not supposed to touch these turtles ,,,but I did,,cant call animal services as I was not to touch the turtle,,, anyone of something I can appy to his shell to keep the ants from killing him ,,,thanks,,, ssbw

hey ziggy, it seems that a fractured shell must be dealt with using resin acetone and such chemicals, I really would not go buy this stuff from hardware stores, maybe you can abandon it somewhere where there are people who would then find it and take it to animal services? Like place it in a box on some street where pedestrians would pass, secure the fracture with medical tape so that ants do not invade before someone finds it, just a thought...

Super glue? I know you can glue cuts with it. I've heard vets may use it for turtle shell
cracks.

If you are not to touch these animals, they are a protected species because they are rare or endangered. Please, please, please call animal services. No offense, but a protected turtle with a cracked shell that has been invaded by ants should be taken care of by someone who knows how to take care of this particular endangered species. I doubt that you can know for sure that all the ants have been eradicated. Can you imagine how horrible it would be sealing hungry voracious ants inside the animals's shell with super glue....

:yeahthat: or potential larvae that had hatched in there

I called animals services ,,,told them I found him trying to cross the street and saw the damage to his shell ,,,I told them I tried to lightly hose out the wounds ,,,I was given a speech about how the turtles are not to be touched ,but was thanked for trying to help the animal,,,they say they will use a resin to fix his shell after some antibionics ,,,I have pics just not sure how to get the to post here ,,,,,thanks for the advice guys ,,,TURTLE POWER,,,,,SSBW

Bless you for taking the time and caring enough to rescue the turtle. And thanks for calling animal services. There are groups that rescue and rehabilitate injured or orphaned wild animals and there are always people who have "specialties". The animal services people probably know a turtle specialist who can nurse Cecil back to health and either turn him back to the wild or place him in a permanent home.

ziggy thats great! it must feel good to do the right thing. Open pics using paint, resize to 40%, save them then upload them in here by clicking Manage Attachements" button below left. full sized pics are normally oversized for the file size limit

Im with THG.

animal services sent me an email about the turtle ,,,first I was told he is a tortoise not a turtle ,,,and he is about ten years old,,,,along with the cracks on his shell he had upper respiratory tract diseases ,,they are treating him with anti bionics but say he might not make it ,,they also told me he is a female ,,,funny how animals touch us ,,I will, pray for her
