Too bad you don't live in California. The stress of being discovered could have triggered an anxiety attack that could be treated with a recommendation from a physician for MMJ. You could legally grow your own in that case. That's kinda/sorta what I ended up doing because I didn't want to go to jail. Long story short, I pulled out of my driveway one day and there was a sheriff's car parked out front and I had 5 plants growing in the house. I got my MMJ card the very next Thursday. Zero stress these days and I actually enjoy going 'shopping' for 'meds' at dispensaries. Well, sort of. Some dispensaries are better than others, that's for sure.
