you can veg them as long as you want depending on the size you want them to be. Growing indoors i usually veg for one or two months.

At what point does it become a bit of a waste of time just keeping them vegging? Obvious it makes sense bigger the plant more buds you get but does there come a time in the plants vegging period they just really slow down growing?

No, not really. It will keep on growing as long as there is more than 12 hours of daylight. The determining factor is generally the space you have. Expect a vegging plant to double or triple in size after put into 12/12. You also have to consider the size and type of light you have for flowering.

Ed Rosenthal among others suggest that growing beyond 17" or so may lead to diminishing returns. Their logic is that once you enter the flowering phase, plants may double to quadruple in size, and it is difficult to provide adequate lighting to the bottom of the plants.

Of course, this is just a guideline: any number of factors could negate this advice: if your flowering space has very little height, then you may have to go shorter; on the other hand, if you have very powerful lights that offer good penetration, you could go taller and etc. and etc.
