I base amount of plants in a space, on plant size...not pot size ? A 10 diameter plant is very small, and not being allowed to use it's canopy to full advantage. Spreading the plant out(LST, SCROG, HST), serves the plant & gardener many advantages...your yields will be higher, and quality much better, plant much healthier.....JMHOBut, they are 10.5 inches in diameter so I am back to only 16 pots in my 4x4 space.
I have decided that I will use both my plastic pots and the new smart pots in the next grow. I'll see what real difference it makes. Can't wait until harvest to see the comparison of root balls between the 2.
By the time I harvest just about the whole one Gallon Smart Pot is full of roots. It looks as if the plant ate all the soil.

Bwana you are making want to try SCROG sooner than later man. Nice job.
So I am growing with soil and as I am probably only going to get to keep one plant after sexing I am looking into a 10 gal smart pot. I will be transplanting from a four-five gallon plastic container. My plant is doing well but last I transplanted everything died fast. I want the better rooting from the smart pot and I may just have the one sweet tree. Is this gonna be overkill for a sativa and I am looking to get the best from my first time around. I have the same soil mix that it is being grown in now. I just don't want my baby to die after transplanting. BTW the four gal is not full of soil its 2/3 full. I need some opinions. I am not overly concerned with end yield but I want a good result when I'm done. I'm learning and I just want something to be semi proud of at the end and as most will agree(these are like my children, as I have none). So to transplant or not to the smart pot? Do you think that I am better to wait till my second attempt at growing? The plants health comes first. HELP!
