G'day everyone.

Welcome to our first grow journal.

We started out by ordering 30 seeds from Nirvana. We got 10 white widow, 10 jock horror and 10 papaya. From our research on strains, we figured that these three would hopefully produce different highs, and looked like fun to grow.

We germenated 24 seeds initially (2 seeds in each of twelve 6" pots). All 24 seeds sprouted, and we realised how wasteful this idea was, but you live and learn.

We selected the best 12 sprouts and began vegetation. Our vegetation set-up is as follows:

-1x 400watt HPS (with Ablite reflector)
- 6" Spectrum Exhaust fan (2850 rpm) connected to ducting cools the HPS
-6" desk fan blowing across plants to stimulate movement
-Airconditioning unit faces growing area, keeping temperatures between 75 and 84 degrees.
-digital hygrometer. RHM usually between 35%-50%

We placed all twelve 6" pots under this set up with 18/6 lighting scheme. Seeds were germenated in Yates special seedling potting mix. Seemed to work well.

After 11 days we noticed that the sprouts looked a little root-bound in the small 6" pots, and made the decision to transplant the best 2 plants of each strain into larger 15 litre plastic pots. We filled these pots with Yates premium potting mix, which has a slow release fertilizer, which should last for up to 8 months.

We also mixed in a combination of perlite and vermiculture with the soil. The pH of the soil is usually around 6.8, which could be a little high. After a few days we noticed big growth on the newly repotted plants.

We have been watering with tap water which we let stand for a minumum of 48 hours before use. Our tap water seems to have a pH of almost 8.0 so we have been using tiny amounts of phospheric acid solution in order to bring it down to about 6.7...is this a good idea? We're not sure if this is doing the plants any good. So far they are growing nicely, but any input would be appreciated!

We are currently at day 20 of veg. here a a couple of photos for you to look at. We hope you like!

Hey dude, your plants look terrific. Keep doing what you are doing. Later.

G'day everybody!

Its been a week since our last post, so we'd thought we'd update you guys on the progress of our grow.

We are currently at day 25 of veg of our 2 White Widows, 2 Papayas and 2 Jock Horrors. There has been plently of growth since our last post and the plants are really starting to bush out now. Our groom is starting to accumulate a nice aroma now!!

We haven't used any ferts yet. We have just been watering each plant approx. 900mls of 6.7ph tap water once a week. We are little hesitant to do much else to them as they same to be going fine with the current regime. If it aint broke, don't fix it we rekon.

Do you guys think we may be underwatering at only once a week??

Also, as we mentioned earlier we are growing in a potting mix, which has a slow release fertalizer that lasts approx 8 month. Does anybody have experience growing in such a soil? If so, did u find a need to add any additional nutes to the soil?

We have also noticed that the stems (particularly the Papaya and one of the jock horror) have turned a little purple, but otherwise look really healthy???

Sorry, one last question. How much longer do u guys rekon we should veg for? Mabey 2-3 weeks??

Now some updated photos for you!

Cheers,

Wahzoo.

a couple of those look a lil droopy, some may need more water than others.

Thanks TurkeyNeck. We took those photos last night, which was day six since last watering. We watered today, and all plants look nice and perky now! Looks like we'll have to increase watering schedule as they get bigger.

No problem man, They look fairly mature, additional veg time should depend on how much vertical space and patience you have. Keep it up.

edit:
I wouldnt add nutes untill flower with that soil. Those timed released ferts make it impossible to control WHAT the plants get and WHEN they get them...

Everything is looking great mang. ;) You should have to water them atleast every 4 or 5 days. A good way to tell when they need a drink is by sticking your finger in the dirt 1 to 2 inches deep. If the soil is dry give them some water. If the soil is still damp let it go for another day. We use Miracle-Gro soil that feeds plants up to 3 months. We don't give any nutes until about week 2 or 3 of flower and even then they are very small doses. In some cases we didn't use nutes at all. IMHO i wouldn't worry much about the purple stems as we get them all the time and it doesn't harm the plants. You should veg your plants until they show alternating nodes which takes about 6 to 8 weeks depending on the strain. This is a sign that your plants are mature and ready for the big dance. ;)

thanks for the feedback TBG.

We have decided to not use any ferts at all during this grow. We will just stick with the slow release nutes in the soil. We will probably just use a bit of Seasol during flowering (seaweed concentrate). Anybody had much success with this kind of product?

We will also start watering every four days now and see how the plants respond. We know about the finger technique to check for soil moisture, but we also have a moisture probe. After like 4 days, the probe indicates that while the top soil is dry, further down there is plenty of moisture, so it makes it tuff to decide wether to water or not, you know.

not too worried about the purple stems, they plants look happy!

thanks for helping peeps!

Let me knowhow the seaweed works if you use it. I am also considering using it later in my grow.

Good luck man! And good mojo on ya grow!

G'day everybody,

Currently at day 32 of veg.

We are back for our weekly update. Its been an interesting week, this week. We had pretty substantial growth this week! All the plants are looking particularly good. They have all started to grow into each other, creating a sea of green canopy. We still haven't added any nutes or supplements to the soil and we are totally happy with the results. We think using this soil with slow release fert is a good way to go for beginner growers. Takes all the risk out of using ferts. All you have to do is water them and let them grow. Piece of cake!

We are still watering only once a week. The plants seem to love this schedule. I think also because we are growing in big plastic pots, there is always sufficient moisture towards the bottom of the pot. I think making the plant reach for the water at the bottom also helps with root growth. We always take our photos on the night before the next water, so its the droopiest they get all week. 99% of the time they are up and perky!

Now here is the intersting bit:

When we checked on the plants this morning (day 32) we noticed something intersting. Three plants (one White Widow, one Papaya and one Jock Horror) all had two white hairs growing out of some of the upper nodes. These are unmistakeably female hairs. They look nothing like secondary growth or anything like that. They look like the two classic pistils of a female. Great new for us! But we are perplexed because we are still on 18/6 lighting and the plants are not yet showing alternating nodes. Is this an early sign that they are almost mature? We are thinking of winding down our lights to 12/12 over the next week. Please let us know your thoughts. Should we wait for alternating nodes??? Three of the plants are still not showing any signs of maturity.

And now some photos.

Thanks everyone!
